Representation in the Customs Declaration
When submitting a customs declaration, businesses or individuals can handle the process themselves or appoint a representative. The type of representation depends on their level of involvement and responsibility.
Selecting the appropriate representation ensures smoother customs clearance and regulatory compliance, depending on the complexity of the shipment and the declarant’s expertise.
Direct Representation
- A customs representative files the declaration in the name of and on behalf of the importer/exporter.
- The importer/exporter retains full legal responsibility for customs obligations.
Indirect Representation
- The representative submits the declaration in their own name but on behalf of the importer/exporter.
- Both the representative and the importer/exporter share legal responsibility.
Self-Representation
- The importer/exporter submits the declaration independently.
- They assume full responsibility for compliance with customs regulations.
Selecting the appropriate representation ensures smoother customs clearance and regulatory compliance, depending on the complexity of the shipment and the declarant’s expertise.
